Cycling in Nepal

Gear up for the ride of your life – a cycling odyssey through the heart of the Himalayas! This epic adventure conquers mountain passes, rewards you with breathtaking descents, and immerses you in Nepal's rich tapestry of culture and history.
Be prepared for a mix of gentle stretches and lung-busting climbs, all thanks to the ever-changing altitude and those gloriously steep gradients – they'll certainly test your granny gear!

A Mountain Biker's Nirvana

Our trips are designed for seasoned riders who crave a challenge. Singletrack dominates the route, offering a thrilling mix of fast technical descents that'll have you whooping with glee, flowing sections perfect for finding your rhythm, and some heart-stopping climbs that might require a spot of pushing (don't worry, a good laugh and a chat with your mates go a long way on these sections!). While the daily distances are manageable, the demanding terrain and high altitude will make for long days in the saddle – a true test of your physical mettle. Acclimatization is crucial, so expect a slower pace during the initial days with a built-in rest day for recovery.

Teahouse Hospitality: Comfort After the Conquest

Accommodation will be provided in traditional guesthouses (teahouses) nestled within the region. While basic, these lodges offer warmth, delicious meals, and a chance to unwind after a day spent battling those epic climbs (and the occasional rogue pothole – it's all part of the adventure, right?). Remember, you're in the heart of the Himalayas, so don't expect all the modern conveniences. However, you'll be well-rested, and well-fed, and might even find a celebratory cold beer to toast your achievements at the end of your ride!

Who Should Join the Peloton?

While this is no Tour-de-France, it still is a high-altitude biking expedition, so it's not for the faint of heart. Riders must be in good physical condition and comfortable handling challenging terrain, pushing their bikes, and riding at high elevations (over 3,000 and 4,000 meters on some days). Strong bike handling skills and experience riding singletrack are essential. After all, a good dose of skill is the best way to navigate those "interesting" sections of the road!

The Terrain: A Challenge (and a Thrill!)

The tour primarily consists of singletrack with some short sections of double track and dirt roads. Expect steep, rocky trails with obstacles and variable surfaces as you climb higher and traverse diverse ecological zones. Pushing your bike might be necessary on some sections, but hey, that just adds to the adventure (and the bragging rights when you get back home!). We have porters who will assist with carrying bikes over Thorong La, a high mountain pass exceeding 5,000 meters. Now that's a climb worth conquering!

The Nitty Gritty:

Bikes:

While bike rentals are available locally (prices will be provided), this tour does not include them. If you choose to bring your bike, ensure it's a well-maintained mountain bike (we will do a mandatory check before the trip), preferably with full suspension.
Remember, a happy bike is a smooth ride (well, as smooth as a bumpy Nepalese road can be!).

Bike Repairs:

Basic tools and spares are carried by the guide and support vehicle. However, having a personal toolkit, spare tube, and pump is highly recommended. After all, there's nothing worse than a flat tire in the middle of nowhere (except maybe forgetting your emergency snacks – don't do that!).

Safety:

Wearing a helmet and hi-visibility attire (could be lycra- we don’t judge) is mandatory on all rides. Your tour leader is first-aid and emergency rescue certified, but ultimately, you are responsible for your safety on the trails. Travel insurance specifically covering mountain bike tours is mandatory.

Guides:

A local English-speaking guide leads the tour. For groups exceeding seven people, an additional guide will be provided. The guides are knowledgeable about the region's history, culture, and religion, and are eager to share their insights with you. Additionally, they are medically trained and experienced cyclists capable of handling most minor bike repairs during the trip.
